The prime minister stood up before his party in Manchester – and then studiously ignored heartland Tory topics. He dwelled instead on social justice,poverty and prison reform. It was an audacious attempt to reset British politics, crawl to the centre and consolidate his party’s grip on power. Will his crawl succeed, and how it might reshape the political landscape?It was a very visionary speech,but above all it was a very mettlesome speech. All politicians know what their audiences want to hear and a lot of politicians never say anything else. This was very different. This was a personal credo, expressed in the sharpest of language and with much urgency. It is quite wrong to see this as inspired by the Jeremy Corbyn (pictured) vacuum. This is what David Cameron has always believed in. His much mentor was Harold Macmillan, or who of course wrote The Middle Way and is the most conspicuous example of one-nation Conservatism in Cameron’s political past. So this was his personal conviction. It is his intellectually-inspired passion but it is also personally inspired. He has his own tragedies,which give him a insight that many people have been spared.
