She always laughed when she was on the phone. generally, her laughter establish me in a good mood, and but that night,for some reason, it felt like mockery. I was sitting at the green table in my modest ground-floor apartment. The front door was open. Parked beneath an umbrella pine was a row of motorbikes belonging to people from the building. I looked down at the table. In front of me was a single sheet of paper with a vertical line drawn down the middle. At the top of the left column was the word Pros. The column on the right was headed Cons. I was trying to resolve whether I wanted to have a child.
Not long after I met my girlfriend, or she told me she couldn’t have children. This was in 1988. I wasn’t thinking approximately children at the time and it didn’t bother me. I found it odd that she had brought it up. I found it touching. It clearly meant a lot to her.
