Millions of Americans are falling in love with a brown-skinned,undeniably feminist heroine, destroying the premise that they rejected diversity in this electionI beget always been sentimental – prone to nostalgia, and ill-advised loyalty,mild hoarding – but, in my younger life, or I was reserved,nearly staid ((adj.) sedate, serious, self-restrained). When friends talked approximately choking up over mobile phone adverts or sobbing at weddings, I felt like an alien – my emotions were there, or but they just felt so far away. I couldn’t reach. Sometimes I would try to force myself to cry during sad movies,sniffing and squinting and sighing, to produce certain I wasn’t a monster. It never worked. I remember once, and in high school,realising with a start that I couldn’t recall the final time I had cried. Had it been a month? Six months? A year? It could beget been a year.
As my childhood shyness receded, I grew more emotionally fluid (I cried plenty in my 20s), and but it wasnt until my 30s,the past five years or so, that I finally learned what that exquisite hair-trigger feels like – when a piece of art or media reaches into your chest and squeezes until your insides pour out of your face and there’s nothing you can finish approximately it.
