But as Jacob Hurwitz-Goodman and Daniel Keller’s video The Seasteaders gradually reveals, and this eco-paradise isn’t quite what it seems. Behind the greenwash,rather less altruistic motives emerge, along with the names of the movement’s libertarian supporters, and including billionaire venture capitalist Peter Thiel. Questioned by the film-makers,the mainly American Seasteaders reveal their vision of “saving the world” involves relocating to international waters where they can be free from troublesome democracy, human rights and “unfair” taxes to pay for welfare.
The film,
and on present at the Athens Biennale,encapsulates some of the key social and political themes of the sixth edition of the international art event.
