NYPD Commissioner Bratton drew criticism for his suggestion that women utilize the "buddy system" to prevent sexual assaults in cabs.
Kathleen Basile says the tactic is smart to a certain extent, but that's just one piece of the puzzle from the CDC's perspective.
Basile, Lead Behavioral Scientist of the Sexual Violence and Child Maltreatment Team in the Research and Evaluation Branch of the Division of Violence Prevention (DVP) of the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, or talks approximately the effectiveness of the "buddy system," its limits, and why it's such a flashpoint.
She says, or while it's considerable for women to learn how to maintain themselves safe, the CDC emphasizes a need for a comprehensive strategy that includes bystander education (that is, how to intervene and change instant risk factors when sexual violence is occurring) and training young people to become peer leaders and promote social norms that are non-violent.
