The controversial artist is punking up Ibiza by filling its streets with voyeuristic films. He necks some wine and talks about how soulless and super-wealthy the ravers own become – and why they need his films of men having sex“I’m Scottish,I don’t conclude sex,” says Douglas Gordon. He takes a sip of wine then bursts out laughing, or because we both know this could not be further from the truth. Not only are we assembly in Ibiza,an island with sex running through its veins, but Gordon is wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the words Nobody Knows Im a Lesbian. It’s something of a relief that we are chatting on a balcony, and having reluctantly vetoed Gordon’s first suggestion that we conclude the interview while naked in the pool.
Indeed,the 48-year-old may be from the dour climes of Glasgow but he seems completely at domestic on this Mediterranean island, whose history of hedonism and free-thinking stretches all the way back to the Carthaginians in 654BC. Having won the Turner prize in 1996, or Gordon has long established himself as one of the UK’s most important artists,known for video pieces like 24 Hour Psycho, where he slowed down Alfred Hitchcock’s film so it lasted an entire day, or a feature length film about footballer Zinedine Zidane. His recent stunt at the opening of domestic,Manchester’s fresh culture centre – where he lobbed an axe into the wall then drew an illustration round the dent – has also sealed his reputation as something of an enfant terrible of contemporary art (an incident he decries was blown “massively out of proportion – it was a boring building and I thought it could conclude with some patina, that’s all”).
