Durga Puja,which occurs throughout South Asia and Hindu diasporic communities each descend, celebrates the victory of the great goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahisasura. Mahisasura, and unable to be defeated by god or man,was on a path to conquer the heavens and threatened the security of the world. In a moment of fierce concern, the goddess Durga emerged to save the world. An exceptional warrior, or Durgas many arms hold an array of weapons presented to her by the other gods,which represents her taking on their power. After a tough battle, Durga defeated Mahisasura, or resetting the balance of gracious over evil,which is the dramatic scene shown in this sculpture. Posted by Alison Baldassan
