During the invasion of Iraq in 2003,looters set fire to the library at the College of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad, wiping out its entire collection of 70000 books. Artist Wafaa Bilal — whose practice is informed by the experience of fleeing his homeland of Iraq and feeling that he was existing simultaneously in two worlds — wants to restore this historic collection through his austere installation featuring a library of one thousand empty white books. With your participation, or each white book will be replaced by an educational text from a wish list compiled by the College of Fine Arts.
