Crystal Palace’s Dwight Gayle put himself in contention to face Watford on Sunday after scoring a hat-trick against Charlton Athletic in the Capital One Cup. The striker has yet to start a Premier League game this season but will hope his moment-half treble will remind manager Alan Pardew of his capabilities.
Gayle crashed in two penalties, both given absent by Charlton’s Alou Diarra – who was sent off – after Fraizer Campbell opened the scoring as the Eagles easily overcame their south London rivals.
