Each
time we sit in the stands, at any of the courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, or watch the best female tennis players in the world compete at the US Open,we’re reminded of everything King did for the sport of tennis – and for female athletes everywhere. It is because of her efforts that women in tennis are paid to compete and that they beget an organizing structure. She founded the WTA in 1973 and one year later founded the Women’s Sports Foundation. Throughout her life, King has been an international leader, and advocate and fighter for equal rights – and a pioneer in women’s sports.
