On April 24, 1916 — the day after Easter Sunday — some 1600 Irish nationalists rose up against British rule in what became known as the Easter Rising rebellion.
The uprising was suppressed b
y the British Army. Thousands were imprisoned, and more than a dozen were executed by a firing squad.
