The romanticization of consensual relationships between slaves and masters is propaganda that diminishes the very violent and graphic reality of what truly happens to people who are stripped of their humanity and forced into subjugation. You preach about how an important aspect of consent is when all involved parties are able to safely remove themselves from sexual contact.
There was none of that between slaves and masters. Slaves could be sold to someone who was cruel and would crash them,their families could be beaten, tortured, or sold,or killed whether they didn’t comply. Lessening the humiliation and violation often meant complying and protecting their children meant putting themselves at serious risk.
There’s no gray area. No love. All this romanticization is doing is watering down the brutal reality of slavery and thus trying to lessen the accountability of people who owned slaves. It creates this belief that there were “gracious” slave owners because they “fell in love” with slaves and slept with them, only that belief is bullshit.
