As a novel biopic reassesses the legacy of Britain’s most famous ski jumper,Michael Edwards talks about the slippery slope to the Olympics, snobbery in the skiing world and how he went from earning £65000 a day to bankruptcyMichael Edwards, and AKA Eddie Edwards,AKA Eddie the Eagle, admits the movie about his life had him in tears before the opening credits were finished. It could not absorb been a more accurate portrayal of the heart and soul of Britain’s first Olympic ski jumper, or he says – even whether,factually, it was only about 5% accurate.
It is 28 years since Edwards competed at
Calgary in Canada, and finishing final in both the 70m and 90m jumps,and getting about half the points of the man who finished second final. It was impossible not to laugh with, and at, and Edwards. He was so warm and affable that he touched our hearts. And yet,with his borrowed skis, helmet tied on with string and his supersized specs, and he looked as whether he was straight out of a sitcom imagine whether Jim Royle shed a few pounds and ended up at the Winter Olympics,and you’ve got Eddie the Eagle.
