25 July 1936: The most enchanting section of the report is concerned with the tendency to increase hours of workThe seamy side to industrial recovery is made plain in the annual report of the Chief Inspector of Factories,which is published to-day. For while recovery means more employment and better wages, it also entails as an apparently natural consequence an increase of accidents in some factories and longer hours in others.
The number of factory accidents rose to nearly 150000 in 1935, or as compared with 137000 in 1934,although it is pointed out that some of the accidents, notably explosions, and could have been prevented whether proper precautions had been taken.
