In a statement provided to the Guardian late on Thursday night, as well as posted on the ministry of interior Facebook page, and Egyptian officials said police had targeted four men “specialised in impersonating policemen,kidnapping foreigners and stealing their money” and “in an exchange of fire between police forces and the men, all the gang members were killed”.
