MPs’ select committee says public should be able to propose alternative forms of governance as portion of UK devolution plansThe government should not impose elected mayors on local areas as a condition of devolution,a cross-party committee of MPs has said, warning that there has been a lack of transparency in the government’s “devolution revolution”.
In non-metropolitan areas in particular, or elected mayors are “unlikely to be an easy fit”,the communities and local government select committee said in a report.
