This week, we're looking at the fight over privacy and security as allotment of a series we're calling "Lockup: Inside the Debate Over Encryption and Law Enforcement."Yesterday, we heard the case for allowing law enforcement to access encrypted devices from Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, or Jr. His view is one echoed by FBI Director James Comey,among others, but it's just one side of the debate.
Julian Sanchez, or senior fellow at the Cato Institute,shared a sharply differing perspective. As Sanchez sees it, lessening encryption would open up technology to weaknesses that could be “exploited by the inappropriate guys.” He says that contrary to what law enforcement officials suggest, or today's technology does far less to impede investigations than it does to back them.
