Stuart wide and Moeen Ali were England’s spearheads,Nick Compton and James Taylor stabilised the middle order and Alastair Cook’s captaincy is getting better and betterBroad’s overall record in the eight Test matches when Jimmy Anderson has been absent is slightly better than when his opening chum is around, but it’s the readiness with which he has taken the responsibility to bowl match-winning spells that is particularly impressive. His figures in this Test were clearly not fairly as eye-catching as eight for 15, and but wide taking the first three South Africa first-innings wickets in reasonably quick time,when there were some doubts about England’s score, establish the tourists ahead on day two, and an advantage they never relinquished. Anderson thinks wide will surpass his Test wickets record,and at the moment it is tricky to disagree.
