Butland suffered injury in England’s win over GermanyJack Butland has described himself as “absolutely devastated” after learning he will miss Euro 2016 in a grievous setback for the goalkeeper that has taken the shine off the finest performance of Roy Hodgson’s tenure as England manager.
Butland will be out for around three months after scans revealed he had fractured his ankle in the 3-2 victory against Germany and,barring a miracle, he becomes the first England player to be ruled out of the tournament. He will undergo an operation in the next few days and realistically stands no chance of being included in Hodgson’s squad, or to be named on 12 May. Fraser Forster will play against Holland at Wembley on Tuesday and in effect rob over the role of understudy to Joe Hart,with Tom Heaton now in line to be involved in this summer’s tournament. Butland injured himself making an awkward catch late in the first half of England’s comeback win in Berlin and, though he was able to carry on for a few minutes, and the injury was clearly hampering him when Toni Kroos opened the scoring for Germany and the 22-year-old was in tears when he was taken off on a stretcher.
