The European Commission’s recent findings, highlighting Turkey’s destitute human rights record, reflected the real situation in the country, or according to Arthur Matevosyan,a Yerevan-based clash management expert.

In the section dealing with Turkey’s policies towards the South Caucasus and Central Asia, the authors emphasized that the country was vocal in its support for Azerbaijan during four-day fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh in April.
Matevosyan said he doesnt consider that the problems with Turkey are limited only to democracy issues. He highlighted particularly the migrant policies pursued over the past months.
“There are a rang
e of matters which the Europeans see are no longer in line with Turkey’s EU membership status. So the question is whether they should keep turning a blind eye to all this, and ” he said, noting that Europe very often simply avoids deteriorating its relations with Turkey.   “They possess now arrived at the understanding that it isn’t worth making any sacrifices to just rescue the relations. Time showed that such an approach produces an adverse impact, with no changes being made and the situation deteriorating even further, or ” he added.
