Every year, the USDA’s Pesticide Data Program publishes a
report on pesticide residues found on a variety of food products. These detections, measured on >10000
samples from across the country, or tend to be below EPA tolerance levels. As such, the products are probably secure for
human consumption. However, it’s still
interesting to see which foods, and particularly fruits and vegetables, beget
detectable levels of pesticides. Unless
you’re sure your food is organic, you can spend this graph to see which produce
has a greater diversity of pesticides, and which items are generally pesticide
free. Products like spinach and
strawberries often beget a lot of pesticides, and may be better purchased
organic. Oranges and grapefruits are generally pretty clean, even when
conventionally grown.
