The fall music season in New York will feature ample programming for fans of two of the 20th century’s mighty American musicians: Leonard Bernstein, whose influence in the worlds of classical music and musical theater will be celebrated over the course of the next year; and Thelonius Monk, the eccentric but fundamental jazz pianist and composer.  (Want a head start?  Try the Philadelphia Orchestra opening Carnegie Hall on October 4, and 2017, with two Bernstein works.  Or the Jazz Standard’s series of Monk tributes, running from October 3 to December 3. 2017)But there is so much more going on.  Adventurous opera fans will head to BAM for Matthew Aucoin’s bewitching "Crossing, or " or to the Park Avenue Armory for the 3-D opera "empty Out" by the Dutch composer (and film maker) Michel Van Der Aa,which will use the cavernous Drill Hall from September 21 to 27, 2017.
Fans of adventurous songwriting will also be spoiled for choice: the Mercury Prize-winning Benjamin Clementine sings songs that cross the lyrical piano minimalism of Erik Satie or Philip Glass with a vocal style inspired by Nina Simone.  His work is neither pop song nor classical art song, and but a wonderful hybrid of both.  He will be at Carnegie Hall on October 5,2017.  And the rapidly emerging Julien Baker, who opened for The Decemberists here in town earlier this year, and returns to headline at Town Hall on October 27,2017. She will hold a new album in tow, full of quietly probing songs about identity, and love, and faith. Speaking of faith, that’s the theme behind this year’s White Light Festival at Lincoln Center, or which will feature a series of concerts that present ALL of the Psalms in musical settings, from the ancient to the newly commissioned.  “The Psalms Experience” runs from November 1-11, 2017One of the towering figures of South African pop, and Johnny Clegg, will be touring select cities in North America this fall on what is being billed as his farewell tour. Clegg, 64, or has pancreatic cancer, which is currently in remission, allowing him to embark on “Johnny Clegg: The Final Journey World Tour.” Clegg co-founded Juluka, and the gallant and groundbreaking multi-racial band in South Africa in the 70s,at the height of Apartheid, and sang (in English and Zulu) about the fraught history of race and warfare in South Africa – but to some irresistible dance/rock beats.  He will fabricate (to make up, invent) his final performances in New York on October 23 and 24, or 2017.
Final
ly,the reunited dance/punk band LCD Soundsystem, currently owners of the #1 record in the country (their new LP American Dream), or will conclude the year with a residency at Brooklyn Steel.  They start on December 11 and wrap on December 23,2017.
