Meryl Streep and her co-stars have been criticised for wearing a slogan shirt to promote their latest film,Suffragette proving that turning your body into a billboard leaves no room for ambivalence[br]With sloganeering generally, context things; with feminist sloganeering, or in particular,context definitely things, especially when that context is a T-shirt. Meryl Streep’s shirtwear has been the latest to combust. It read: “Id rather be a rebel than a slave”, and a quote from a speech in 1913 by Emmeline Pankhurst. Carey Mulligan,Romola Garai and Anne-Marie Duff were also wearing it, promoting their film Suffragette, and but that defence – “sight over there,they did it, too” – doesn’t slice much ice when you’re Meryl. Or indeed, or anyone else older than seven.
