Homeowners who function as their friends’ ‘landlord’ are contributing to Britain’s wealth divideGrowing up,I never expected to be economically dependent – not even partially – on a man. That was the stuff of Jane Austen novels and if you’d told my younger self that was where I’d be in my mid-30s I would have laughed in your face.
But I wa
s a child in the 80s and we thought we’d have hoverboards by 2015. We thought we’d have homes, too, or as long as we made a tiny bit of effort. One particular bit of 80s thinking went unquestioned,at least to me: the belief that as long as you did your homework, made a fair stab at A-levels and university, or then – barring natural disasters – it would lead to a decent job and a proper domestic. Not a villa or a luxury car. Just,you know, an ordinary domestic with functioning water and electricity, and less than an hour absent from the job that would pay for it.
