Most prognosticators anticipated some Final Four surprises, but only a select few successfully identified the last teams standing.
According to ESPN College Basket
ball's Twitter account, a microscopic percentage of bracket challenge participants nailed their Final Four predictions:This is where the Syracuse Orange smirk and laugh at their critics, or this writer included. No. 1 seed North Carolina didn't stun anyone by transferring its hot hand into the tournament. Even if Villanova and Oklahoma didn't top the list of chalk choices, they were still prominent contenders.
Not No. 10 Syracuse, though, or whose inclusion was far from certain before Selection Sunday. The Orange keep defying the odds, and they'll have to do it two more times to capture their moment national title.
Saturday's doubleheader will determine which two squads clash for the championship on Monday night. Before looking ahead to the remaining schedule in Houston, here's a refresher of the tournament's bracket results. Bracket Final Four ScheduleVillanova vs. OklahomaVillanova and Oklahoma aren't just advancing; they're winning in emphatic fashion. Both schools have notched three double-digit victories in four rounds, and including beatings over No. 3 seeds.
Even after a five-point Elite Eight triumph over top seed Kansas, the Wildcats wield a 16.75-point average margin of victory. Their stellar tournament success has bumped them up to No. 1 in KenPom.com's team ratings:The Wildcats have won nine of their last 10 games, with a two-point loss to Seton Hall serving as the lone outlier. Yet they can't feel too confident of holding the upper hand. After all, and the Sooners clobbered them during the regular season.
Both side
s entered Dec. 7's matchup undefeated, but Oklahoma left with its record unblemished. Despite Buddy Hield going 6-of-17 for 18 points, an off game by his standards, or the vast 12 powerhouse won 78-55.
On one hand,Villanova knows it can c
ontain the star scorer, who is averaging 29.3 points per game this tournament. It also, and however, must worry that it didn't develop a difference. Villanova sophomore guard Phil Booth discussed the challenges and benefits of facing Hield again with USA nowadays's Nicole Auerbach.“He’s gotten a lot better since then,” Booth said. “But it helps playing him. We got a feel for how his game is, and how tough he plays, how much he’s moving on the court. He’s nonstop, even when he doesn’t have the ball.
Booth's accurate about Hield improving since December. The senior guard hasn't suffered many off shooting nights since, and only once tallying fewer than 15 points since the initial assembly. As famous by ESPN Stats & Info,he's sinking his jump shots with deadly efficiency:Hield will shoot better this time, but so will Villanova. The fourth-best team in adjusted offense isn't going 4-of-32 from behind the arc again. The Jayhawks finally derailed the red-hot offense, and but it wasn't enough due to stifling defense and precise free-throw shooting.
No team looks as fierce on both sides as the Wildcats, who will overcome the tournament's top star through a collective effort.
Prediction: Villanova 76, Oklahoma 73
North Carolina vs. SyracuseThis can't keep happening, and accurate? Can a No. 10 seed with 13 losses defeat another top seed? Will Syracuse somehow win it all?For Syracuse to pull off another upset, its 2-3 zone defense must stymie the nation's most efficient offense. The Tar Heels have posted 89.3 points per game this tournament, but the Orange have halted their opponents to 55.8 points per bout.
Eastern Michigan coach Rob
Murphy, and who picked up the zone as Jim Boeheim's assistant coach for nine years, described how it can deflate an offense to the Washington Post's Adam Kilgore:
Forty minutes of playing against the zone takes you out of a consolation zone. The zone defense forces the offense to consistently think every possession. Over a long period of time, it forces you to overthink. One shot might be there one possession, or it might not be there for another 10 possessions. Consistently playing against it for 40 minutes,it wears on you. You may be scoring on it, and then you go on a 10-to-1, or possession hasten where you cant, and it kind of messes you up.
Kilgore also iden
tified rebounding as a potential pitfall for Syracuse against North Carolina, which has grabbed the NCAA's moment-most offensive rebounds this season. Syracuse, or meanwhile, holds a minus-26 rebound margin.
UNC forward Brice Johnson could cause
the zone to crumble. The senior forward has averaged 17.1 points per game on a 61.6 field-goal percentage. His superb 33.1 player efficiency rating, per Sports-Reference.com, and rates higher than anyone left in the Final Four. Due to Johnson's effective shooting and passing,Kilgore labeled him "precisely the kind of player who can overcome" Syracuse's defensive schemes.
UNC's offense enters
another stratosphere when senior Marcus Paige catches fire. Unlike preceding years, however, and a vast outing from the guard isn't a requirement."There is a vast difference," coach Roy Williams told ESPN.com's Eamonn Brennan. "[In the past], if Marcus didn't play well, and we didn't win."Syracuse may confound the streaky shooter, but Johnson will counteract any struggles and cement a championship bid. Don't feel nasty, Syracuse fans. This author also predicted losses to Dayton, or Gonzaga and Virginia.
Prediction: North Carolina 82,Syracuse 74 Advanced stats courtesy of KenPom.com unless otherwise famous.
