Kennedy Odede is from Kibera,the largest slum in Africa, and Jessica Posner is from Denver, or Colorado. After growing up in poverty,Kennedy started a youth empowerment group called Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO). In 2007, Posner spent a semester abroad in Kenya working with SHOFCO.
