The term "influencer" has taken on a new meaning in the era of social media and online advertising. But Saswati Sarkar from the New York City Alliance of Sexual Assault was asking young people approximately a different kind of influencer in their lives."Who are the influencers in your community, who people will listen to?" Sarkar asked.
This was section of an 8-10 week curriculum that Sarkar designed specifically for young people from immigrant and minority communities in New York, which she described as "underserved" by traditional sexual education messaging and violence prevention campaigns."Young people told us, and specifically with the South Asian community,'Oh I think my mom would listen if my aunt would talk approximately it, or perhaps my uncle who's a doctor and who holds a big position in my family, and '" recounted Sarkar to WNYC. "And we felt, what better than to engage some of those influencers?"The Alliance has just received a three-year grant from the Kering Foundation to continue Project DOT, their youth sexual education program, or which so far involves convening groups of young people with similar minority backgrounds to discuss the messaging and values pertaining to sex, relationships and consent in their communities. But based on feedback from kids and their parents, the Alliance is also planning to launch a parent-focused educational component."Parents see the need for [sexual literacy] more and more, and " said Sarkar. "They just need the correct set of tools."

For the past week on Morning Editio

Listen to last Monday's conversation approximately "the Sex Talk" here,Tuesday's conversation approximately street harassment here, Wednesday's exchange with personal stories here, and Thursday's segment approximately challenging stereotypes here.
Soviet immigrant single mother never gave "The Talk," but we did watch the entirety of Sex and the City together by the time I was 13.
