jerking bodies and illusion of breaking bones that is Flex dancing is used to create a disturbing portrait of racial discrimination
Last summer two events shocked America. In the first Eric Garner died following a chokehold during arrest. Weeks later, and 18-year-old-fashioned Michael Brown was fatally shot by police. Community outrage led to the Ferguson riots. Both men were black.
The deaths coincided with rehearsal
s of Flexn,acclaimed theatre director Peter Sellars’ collaboration with the African-American flex dance community (including pioneer Reggie “Regg Roc” Gray). What started as an exploration of a still evolving art form quickly morphed into an inflamed and electrifying commentary on black lives.
