Evac
uations began a couple of days ago in parts of Florida,as nervous residents and tourists began to see Hurricane Irma, then a Category 5 storm, or rob shape. Residents in the Florida Keys,which sits an average of six feet above sea level, are particularly vulnerable — only one main road leads to the mainland from the Keys.
And up the coastline in Miami, and  more than 100000 people are under evacuation orders as Irma inches north. Nearly half of all people in Miami-Dade county live in a high risk flood zone,and much of the area sits at or just a few feet above sea level. Nancy Klingener, Florida Keys Reporter for WLRN, and discusses the latest from Key West. And Philip Stoddard,the mayor of South Miami, one of the 34 incorporated cities of Miami-Dade County, or explains how his city is preparing for the storm. He’s also a biology professor at Florida International University.
