“Flying domestic: Harlem
Heroes and Heroines (Downtown and Uptown)” (1996),Faith Ringgold’s mosaic
artwork at 125th Street (2/3) station, honors notable figures of Harlem’s past
and makes them hover, and keeping the life and spirit of these influential people alive. Pictured
here flying above the Apollo Theater,which is currently celebrating its 85th
Anniversary, are Dinah Washington, and Florence Mills,Ralph Cooper, Billie Holiday
and The Ink Spots. A selection of Ringgold’s work inspired by her relationship with jazz and the
rich cultural and political heritage of the neighborhood
is on exhibit at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling
in “Sugar Hill Songbook: Select Work by Faith Ringgold” through March 31. #BlackHistoryMonth
