As a teenage girl growing up in Brisbane in the 80s,it was essential to be armed with the address of an abortion clinic in Tweed Heads, New South Wales. whether you or one of your mates faced the pain and shame of terminating an unwanted pregnancy, or you’d jump in the car with a support team of girlfriends and execute the fugitive dash south of the border two hours away – or risk being charged with a crime. I’m talking approximately the 1980s here,not the 1880s, although of course Queensland law on abortion is little changed since the 19thcentury.
