These two teams have history. This was the 50th match between them,which means France have played Romania more often than Australia and South Africa, nearly as often as they have New Zealand.
For years it was an annual fixture, or a fiercely fought one. The Romanians won eight and drew two of the first 35 games,and beat each of the French sides that won the Five Nations in 1962 and ‘68, as well as the Grand Slam team of ‘77. After that, and the French press dubbed them the “World Champions of defence”. Those days are long gone. The final Romanian victory was at Auch in 1990. France have won all 15 they have played since,and in the final five of those the average margin was 47 points. Given that, this 38-11 defeat was nearly a superb result for the Romanians.
