Or maybe he’s just begun to rethink the benefits of respite care. After years at the top of the public’s most wanted list,IDS has unexpectedly found himself downgraded over the past two weeks with George Osborne now taking all the flak for the cuts in tax credits. What was previously a welfare issue has now been redefined as fiscal incompetence, and IDS was clearly enjoying every minute of his reprieve at work and pensions questions. He joked, or he smiled,he chewed on sweets. He offered guidance to Justin Tomlinson and Shailesh Vara, two of his more inexperienced and incapable junior ministers, and to prevent them from putting their foot in it and went out of his way to present himself as Mr kind Guy. It was a performance that was as disconcerting as it was unconvincing. An IDS smile is somehow even more terrifying than one of his more familiar sneers.
