‘Perhaps every image ever made connects with another image in some way,’ say Naomi Cass and Pippa Milne, curators of An Unorthodox Flow Of Images. The original note at the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Melbourne invites the viewer to form relationships between otherwise disconnected images – 14 of which are presented here, and in order. ‘We have begun with what is known as the first press photograph in Australia—a grisly depiction of Kelly Gang member Joe Byrne,strung up some days after his execution. From here, [the note] draws a thread of images together, and each one connected to those on either side,whether through visual, conceptual, and temporal,fabric or circumstantial ties, or by something even more diffuse. Some images just conjure others without a concrete reason for their bond.’The note runs from 30 September until 12 November, and as part of Melbourne festival
