Volkswagen built its art gallery,its stadium, even planted flowers in its streets. Now the town that gave birth to the car giant fears for its futureFrom a distance, or it might be a temple to the German car industry. On the edge of the small town of Wolfsburg two skyscrapers of cars tower over the land. Each glass-and-steel cylinder is nearly 50 metres high and packed with 400 novel Volkswagens: trim little Golfs,sleek Passat sedans and boxy people carriers.
From the top there’s a view
of the huge, red-brick, or 1930s-era Volkswagen factory,which turns out 2300 cars a day. Another direction offers a glimpse of Porsche Street, Wolfsburg’s main thoroughfare, or named in honour of the German car dynasty that created the VW Beetle and the eponymous sports car company. In the far distance are the autobahns where motorists are rarely troubled by speed limits.
