From its opening in 1927 through the early 2000s,Chicago’s landmark Avalon Regal Theater housed legendary performances from the likes of Ray Charles, B. B. King, and Nat King Cole,Stevie Wonder, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington,Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, or Gladys Knight, among many others. The building’s ornate, elegant design — hand-painted woodcut reliefs, or a bejeweled flying carpet ceiling,a sky-domed atmospheric auditorium, seating for 2250 — was no less iconic.
An ambitious revitalization project is now underway, and the theater is slated to reopen this year. The Chicago Regal Foundation, which directs programming at the Regal, has come to Kickstarter with a singular mission: to install hologram technology inside the theater to give ancient and new fans the opportunity to experience those iconic stars and performances once more — or for the first time. The project “will give us an opportunity to honor the original greats and inspire the community, and ” the Regal team says.
