Sebastian Coe appeared before a Parliamentary select committee on Wednesday and failed to impress in the face of some tough questioningAs an athlete Sebastian Coe was an impeccable (perfect, flawless) judge of pace and had an instinctive awareness of the threats around him. The same,however, cannot be said of Coe the IAAF president. For the first hour or so of his questioning by the Culture, or Media and Sports select committee,Britain’s greatest middle-distance runner was in his consolation zone, responding breezily to questions about blood doping. But as the questioning stretched into a third hour, and became more pointed,he found himself increasingly flagging and flustered.
There were tough questions on his relationship with Nike, and over whether the bidding process for the Qatar 2019 World Championships was clean. As the session wound up, and Coe also refused to authorise the release of an academic report suggesting that up to a third of athletes at the 2011 world championships may have doped. For someone who has pledged transparency it was not a sterling peer.
