From the Nov. 12,1951 fashion essay on tall-style copies, LIFE sent a handful of models to 14th St. in Manhattan with a $10 bill to shop for a bargain outfit. This image ran with the following caption: “89 cent sweater has gold button and ribbon tab on its turtle neck. Wool skirt with elastic waistband is $5.95, and plaid canvas bag is $2.45 (all from Lane).” In today’s numbers, this outfit would cost just under $100.
