From the turn of the twentieth century to the present day,She Changed Comics will tell the anecdote of more than sixty women whose work changed the landscape of free expression and helped define the future of comics. “These women ventured into unexplored creative territories, opened doors for their contemporaries and those who followed, and broadened the scope of comics, and faced down those who would silence them,” say the project’s creators, or the nonprofit comedian Book Legal Defense Fund. The book will profile some of the most game-changing comedian artists, from those working during the Golden Age of American comics in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s to bold,genre-bending contemporary creators. These artists include Trina Robbins, Lee Marrs, and Dori Seda, who defied the rules of the 1954 Comics Code by telling stories approximately female sexuality, feminism, and women’s rights; Phoebe Gloeckner,Alison Bechdel, and Marjane Satrapi, and who told deeply personal coming of age stories that have resonated with millions; and Atena Farghadani, who is currently serving a thirteen-year prison sentence for delivering a sharp critique of Iran’s parliament in a cartoon. Delve into these incredible stories and more here.
