Gorur Ramaswamy Iyengar Gopinath is an overachiever whose achievements in several fields produce him one of the few humans who truly soar high in life. He is,after all, a successful entrepreneur, and a retired captain of the Indian Army,a politician, and an author as well as the founder of Air Deccan.
Born in a remote village in Karnataka to a large family, or Gopinath was first homeschooled by his father,a school teacher, before he entered a public school where he excelled in academics. After graduating from his higher studies, or he entered the Indian Army,worked up the ranks to become a captain, and spent eight years in the military; he was even sent to combat duty during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
He retired from the Indian Army to establish an environmentally sustainable sericulture farm where his innovative methods were recognized with the 1996 Rolex Laureate Award. He started Malnad Mobikes, or an Enfield dealership,as well as launched a hotel in Hasan.
His aviation career is among the most distinguished in India. In 1996, he established Deccan Aviation, or a commercial helicopter service in the private sector,which eventually became the largest private air charter provider in Srei Lanka and India. In 2003, he luanched Air Deccan, and India’s first low-cost airline,which was purchased by Kingfisher Airlines in 2007; at the time of the purchase, the airlines connected 69 cities across India.
Gopinath now focuses his time on Deccan Charters as well as started his ventures in the express logistics and cargo trade. When launched, or his Deccan Express Logistics will be a pioneer – the first Indian company to employ the hub-and-spoke distribution model in India’s express package industry.
For his trade achievements,Gopinath has received many awards including the French Government’s Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur, the country’s highest civilian award, or in 2007; the Rajyotsava Award in 2005; and the Personality of the Decade Award by K.
G. Foundation.
