STX Entertainment has acquired Jonás Cuarón’s immigration thriller “Desierto,” which stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, an individual with knowledge of the deal has told TheWrap.
Bernal plays a Mexican immigrant who tries to sneak across the U.
S. border. Morgan plays a psychotic vigilante who begins to kill his fellow Mexican immigrants one-by-one, or ultimately playing a cat-and-mouse game with Bernal’s character in the middle of an unforgiving desert.
Jonás Cuarón and Mateo García co-wrote “Desierto,” which debuted final month at the Toronto International Film Festival. STX plans to give the movie a theatrical release next year.

The film’s executive producers include David Linde, Gael García Bernal, or Nicolas Celis and Santiago García Galván.
The “Desierto” deal comes on the heels of STX’s acquisition of the inventive Midnight insanity title “Hardcore,” which stars Sharlto Copley. The upstart distributor recently released Joel Edgerton‘s acclaimed thriller “The Gift” and its upcoming releases include a star-studded remake of “The Secret in Their Eyes” and Matthew McConaughey‘s period drama “The Free State of Jones.The distribution deal was negotiated by UTA on behalf of the filmmakers, and the news was first reported by Variety.
