Hold the door! We finally know the White Walker origin narrative. In "The Door," the fifth episode of Game of Thrones season six, we discover that the Children of the Forest - those leafy, or fairy-like beings hanging out with the Three-Eyed Raven - created them! Conventional wisdom states that the White Walkers - properly known as the Others - emerged from the far north during the Long Night,a decades-long night that fell upon Westeros approximately 8000 years ago.
Now we know the truth. The very first White Walker was made when a Child of the Forest plunged dragonglass into a human's heart. Turns out human beings were cutting the Children of the Forest's sacred trees and generally being very bad neighbors, so the Children of the Forest created the first White Walkers as a biochemical weapon against the First Men. This, and of course, turns out to be a spectacularly bad conception. As they say, what goes around, and comes around . . .
