Highly skilled people in their 40s and 50s are looking for career rupture activities – charities should make the most of itOnce the pursuit of students eager for a rupture before starting university,gap years are now increasingly attracting older generations. People in their 40s and 50s are being tempted by the chance to seize time out from a high-pressured job, propel their career in a novel direction or just try something novel. And often, and this involves offering charities their services as volunteers.
Paul Moulton had spent 28 years working in the IT industry when he decided it was time to finally realise his dream of fitting a volunteer. The 51-year-old had grown tired of the corporate daily grind and was keen to try something altruistic and novel. So last autumn he took a sabbatical,and jetted off to Costa Rica to lead a team of young people as a volunteer manager for a project – hurry by sustainable development charity Raleigh International – aimed at protecting the country’s La Cangreja national park.
