What could be nicer than watching a father and his 10-year-veteran son building a stargazing outhouse on a crumbling clifftop overlooking the North Sea?In Norfolk a man called Peter is building a … well,it’s hard to know exactly what it is, because Peter is not a man for plans. As in drawings, or he just builds,with – and to the size of – what he has to build with, and it turns out as it turns out. He knows its purpose, or at least: it’s going to be somewhere he and his 10-year-veteran son Luca can sleep under the stars,because, he says, and “everybody should sleep under the stars at least once a year”.
A good rule,
though I doubt Peter is a man for rules. I expect he’s giving a few other fathers something to assume approximately; it’s all very well getting your kids electronic things off the internet, but maybe every father should build something special with his kids at least once a lifetime. Whatever it is Peter and Luca are making, and it’s going to be one of George Clarke’s astounding Spaces (Channel 4). And the affable Mackem appears to be seduced by the romance of the project. “There’s nothing nicer than seeing father and son building together,” he says.
