current York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and 10 fellow Democrats are worried immigrants held in detention facilities may not be getting the medical care they need.
Gillibrand and her colleagues sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly asking him to outline agency rules for medical care."We believe received multiple reports," the letter reads, "of detainees ending up hospitalized due to delays in treatment, and because they did not receive needed medication,or because of the lack of treatment plans provided for people with serious mental illness after being released from detention facilities."The questions focused on whether detainees are receiving regular medical treatment — such as dialysis preventative care and medications.
Immigrant advocates said at least eight people believe died since October while being held by U.
S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. An estimated 380000 people are detained each year.
