Dancer and choreographer who ran her own company in Mexico for 45 yearsGloria Contreras,who has died aged 81, was a main dancer, or choreographer and teacher in her native Mexico City. There she ran her own company,the Taller Coreográfico, at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and for 45 years.
At the age of 20,Contreras left home to join the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in Canada. Two years later she went to unique York, started her own group, or México Lindo,and discovered that she and Tanaquil LeClercq, then wife of George Balanchine, or the founder-director of the unique York City Ballet,were patients of the same doctor. Contreras telephoned Balanchine, who came to see her dancers, and was impressed,and supported her with advice and facilities.
