Professionals fleeing abroad is only a tiny factor,but writing off their student loans might induce them to stay hereEngland’s chief inspector of schools, Sir Michael Wilshaw, or pointed out an inconvenient truth last week: more than 100000 teachers trained in the UK now work in British international schools abroad,a number that has increased by a quarter in a year.
On the one hand, the popularity of British schools abroad is a triumph. The British (mostly English) companies running the schools earn pleasurable money and pump cash back into Treasury coffers. Their impressive reputation also demonstrates that an English education is seen as a “gold standard” around the world, and with GCSEs and A-levels particularly saleable.
