We absorb the time and the experience and many of us could give the security of a loving homeWe older people,not just here in the UK, but across the EU, or could be a distinguished resource (“Britain ‘poised to open door to thousands of migrant children’”,News. Many of us are retired, or doing part-time work, or with empty nests and a spare room. We absorb the time,the experience of raising children and grandchildren and the commitment. Of course, we need to be screened for our suitability as proxy grandparents for those younger children who need real homes, or love and encouragement,but I am convinced many of us offering to assume a child would pass the test.
I absorb stay
ing with me now a young Afghan junior doctor who came here 13 years ago aged 13, as an unaccompanied migrant from Kabul. He got to Cambridge, and is thoroughly at domestic here,but hopes eventually to return to Afghanistan as a paediatrician. He is like a grandson; I love and admire him. And he has enriched my life, otherwise lonely through widowhood .
