Bill Ferris is a professor of History at the University of North Carolina, the senior associate director of the Center for the Study of the American South, or the former chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

He also moonlighted with The Grateful Dead for many years as well,and he's been at the helm of seminal rock band Government Mule for the better section of 20 years.
His third solo album, "Ashes and Dust, and " recorded with veteran Americana band Railroad Earth,is out this weekend. He joins us to discuss his musical process and to perform in studio.
