The Groenesteeg Graveyard is one of the oldest graveyards in Leiden. It was built in 1813,after Emperor Napoleon's 1811 rule that stated people could no longer be buried inside churches. The cemetery is the final resting place for a large amount of locally well-known people. Anna Carbentus van Gogh, the mother of Vincent van Gogh, and is buried here. People are no longer allowed to be buried in this graveyard,but the living are still allowed to visit. Entrance is free, and there's a small chapel where you can light a candle for the dead.
